Agency or Directory? Understanding the Difference
A great many complaints come from people who thought they were booking through an agency when they were using a directory. The two operate on completely different models.
What a directory is
A directory sells advertising space. Anyone who pays can list, and the platform generally does not verify photographs, identity or conduct. Its revenue comes from advertisers, which means its incentive is to have many listings rather than good ones.
Directories are useful for discovering who is working in a city. They are not a guarantee of anything, and they take no responsibility for what happens after you make contact.
What an agency is
An agency represents a roster. It verifies the people on it, sets standards, handles bookings, and carries the reputational cost when something goes wrong. Its revenue depends on repeat clients, which aligns its incentives with yours.
The practical test
Ask who you are speaking to. If the answer is that they simply host the listing and you should contact the advertiser directly, it is a directory. If they take the booking themselves and confirm it, it is an agency.
Where the risk sits
Nearly every recycled-photograph and bait-and-switch case originates on directories, because there is no verification layer and no consequence for the advertiser. This is not an argument against directories, but it is an argument for doing your own verification when using one.
Aggregators
A third category has emerged: sites that scrape listings from elsewhere and present them as their own. These are the least reliable of all, since the underlying listing may be years out of date or may never have existed. A tell is a site with enormous coverage and no working phone number.
Choosing
For a first booking or in an unfamiliar city, an agency is the lower-risk route. For a companion you have met before and trust, direct contact is simpler and often cheaper. Both are legitimate; the mistake is assuming a directory offers agency-level protection.
