Is Tipping Expected? Gratuity Conventions in Greece
Tipping generates more uncertainty than it deserves. The Greek convention is straightforward.
It is not expected
Rates in Greece are quoted as complete. Unlike some markets, gratuity is not assumed and is not built into pricing. Not tipping is entirely normal and carries no implication.
This differs from the United States in particular, where tipping norms are stronger. Visitors from there frequently over-tip out of habit, which is appreciated but unnecessary.
If you do tip
There is no percentage convention. Clients who tip usually do so as a round sum for an evening that went particularly well. Give it in cash, discreetly, at the end rather than the start — a tip offered at the beginning reads as an expectation of something.
What is often valued more
Rebooking. A companion who knows you will return has something more useful than a one-off gratuity. Regular clients get better availability, more flexibility and a genuinely better experience because familiarity improves everything about the format.
Other gestures
Covering a taxi for a late-night journey home, or paying for dinner rather than splitting attention over the bill, are small courtesies that register more than cash. So does being easy to deal with — punctual, clear, respectful of the agreed time.
What is not a substitute
A tip does not buy anything beyond the booking. Offering more money mid-booking to change what was agreed is the fastest way to end it early, and it is read as exactly what it is.
For agency bookings
Any tip goes to the companion directly, not to the agency. Hand it to her rather than routing it through anyone else.
