Companionship on Crete, Rhodes and the Larger Greek Islands

Mykonos and Santorini dominate the conversation, but they are not typical of the Greek islands. Crete and Rhodes are substantial places with permanent populations, and their markets work quite differently.

Year-round versus seasonal

Crete has around 600,000 residents and Rhodes about 120,000. These are functioning societies rather than seasonal resorts, which means a year-round market exists rather than the four-month spike seen on the smaller islands.

The practical consequence is that availability outside the tourist season is far better than on Mykonos, where the market essentially closes in October.

Crete

Crete is large — nearly 260 kilometres end to end — and effectively has several separate markets. Heraklion and Chania are the main centres, with Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos smaller. A companion based in Chania is not going to travel to Agios Nikolaos for a two-hour booking, and expecting it misunderstands the geography.

Travel within Crete

The north-coast highway connects the main cities reasonably quickly. Anything involving the south coast or the mountain interior takes far longer than the map suggests.

Rhodes

Rhodes concentrates around Rhodes Town in the north, with the resort strip at Faliraki and the west-coast hotels. It has a longer season than the Cyclades, running comfortably from April to October, and a substantial year-round population in the town.

The other islands

Corfu, Kos and Zakynthos all have seasonal markets driven by package tourism. Availability is genuinely limited and heavily concentrated in the resort areas. Booking ahead is essential rather than advisable.

General advice for island bookings

Establish where the companion is actually based rather than assuming island-wide coverage. Confirm travel arrangements and whether they are included. And be specific about your location, because island addresses are unreliable everywhere in Greece.
