The Athens Riviera: Booking in Glyfada and the Southern Suburbs
The southern coastal strip is a distinct part of Athens with its own character, and booking there works differently from the centre in a few concrete ways.
The area
Running from Palaio Faliro south through Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni to Varkiza, the Riviera is where Athens goes in summer. It has the beach clubs, the marina restaurants, and a noticeably more relaxed, affluent atmosphere than the centre.
Glyfada is the commercial heart of it — shopping, restaurants, bars — and the most common booking location. Vouliagmeni is quieter and more expensive.
Travel time and supplements
This is the practical difference. Glyfada is around thirty minutes from central Athens without traffic and considerably more with it. Most agencies apply a travel supplement for the southern suburbs, which is reasonable and should be quoted upfront.
The tram
The coastal tram connects the centre to Glyfada and Voula. It is slow but reliable, and worth knowing about if you are staying on the coast and heading into town.
Why it suits summer
From June to September the Riviera is simply more pleasant than the centre, which becomes very hot. Dinner by the water in Vouliagmeni or drinks at a beach club in Glyfada is a better evening than the same money spent downtown, and companions generally prefer it too.
Hotels and short lets
The coast has a good supply of resort hotels and a very large number of short-term rental apartments. Both are straightforward. Apartment buildings here often have gated parking and entry systems, so confirm access arrangements when booking.
Booking advice
Allow a wider arrival window than you would in the centre, and book longer durations — the area rewards an unhurried evening and a two-hour booking spends a quarter of itself in transit.
