Companions in Piraeus and the Port Area

Piraeus is Greece's main port and effectively a city in its own right, adjoining Athens to the southwest. Booking there has its own rhythm, driven almost entirely by shipping schedules.

The port drives everything

Piraeus runs on ferry and cruise timetables. Early-morning ferry departures to the islands mean a large transient population arriving the night before, and cruise turnarounds create sudden concentrations of visitors with a single day in port.

If you are catching a morning ferry, book earlier in the evening than you otherwise would. Ferry departures from Piraeus are unforgiving and the port is large and confusing to navigate in a hurry.

Hotels near the terminals

There is a cluster of hotels within walking distance of the main terminals, catering to exactly this transient traffic. They are accustomed to short stays and irregular hours, and are entirely unremarkable about visitors.

Cruise passengers

A cruise call gives you a fixed window, usually a single day. Book well ahead for a specific date, and be realistic about travel time back to the ship — Piraeus port traffic on a turnaround day is severe.

Travel to and from central Athens

The metro connects Piraeus to central Athens in around twenty minutes and is the reliable option. By road it can be much longer at peak times. Most agencies treat Piraeus as within the greater Athens area, though a supplement is possible.

The area itself

Piraeus is working, unpretentious and considerably less polished than central Athens. Around Mikrolimano and Kastella the waterfront is genuinely lovely, with good seafood restaurants and a relaxed evening atmosphere that many visitors prefer to the tourist centre.

Booking advice

Be precise about which part of Piraeus, because it is large and the terminals are far apart. Give a terminal number or a landmark rather than just the port name.
