Seasonality: How Prices and Availability Shift Through the Year

The Greek companionship market has one of the strongest seasonal patterns in Europe, driven entirely by the movement of tourism between the mainland and the islands.

The summer migration

From June to September a substantial share of companions relocate from Athens to Mykonos, Santorini and the other tourist islands. This is the defining feature of the Greek market and it has two consequences: island availability is high but expensive, and Athens availability thins noticeably.

August is the peak of this. Athens empties of Greeks generally, the islands are at capacity, and rates on Mykonos in particular reach their annual high.

Autumn

From late September the flow reverses. Companions return to Athens, island availability collapses, and Athens becomes both well supplied and easier to book. October and November are, practically speaking, the best months to book in the city.

Why autumn is underrated

Athens is more pleasant in October than in August, rates are stable, and companions are less booked. For a visitor with flexible timing it is the obvious choice.

Winter

December through February is the quietest period. The islands are effectively closed, and Athens runs on local and business demand. Availability is good and short-notice booking is realistic in a way it never is in summer.

The exception is the Christmas and New Year period, which is busy in Athens for a fortnight.

Spring

March to May sees the market rebuild toward the islands. Athens remains well supplied through April, with the shift beginning in earnest in May. Late spring on the islands — before the peak — offers the best combination of availability and price.

Do rates actually change?

Athens rates are relatively stable year-round. Island rates are strongly seasonal, sitting well above Athens in July and August and dropping sharply either side. Booking Mykonos in June rather than August is a meaningful saving for a very similar experience.
