The summer island rush
From June to September the islands are the centre of gravity. Weekend availability on Mykonos in peak season can be genuinely scarce, and last-minute booking is unreliable. Midweek is easier and often cheaper.
Winter is the buyer's market
Outside the season, Athens availability is at its best and rates are softest. If flexibility is on your side, the quiet months give you the widest choice and the least competition.

Match your lead time to the season: weeks ahead for August and the islands, a few days for an ordinary Athens weekend, and same-day is realistic only in the quiet winter months.
