How Payment Works: Methods, Timing and Discretion
Payment is the part of a booking people are most awkward about, largely because the conventions are never stated. They are simple.
Cash is the norm
The overwhelming majority of bookings in Greece are settled in cash, in euros, at the start. There are practical reasons on both sides — immediacy, privacy, and no processing fees — and it remains the default expectation unless an agency says otherwise.
Bring the exact amount. Asking a companion to make change at the start of a booking is a small thing that sets an unfortunate tone.
When it happens
At the beginning, discreetly. The convention is an envelope left somewhere visible — a side table, a shelf — rather than handed over. Neither person counts it in front of the other. Getting this out of the way in the first minutes means it is not hovering over the rest of the time.
Never at the end
Paying at the end, or raising the amount at the end, is how disputes start. The rate was agreed when you booked and the moment for questions was then.
Card and transfer
Some larger agencies accept card payment. If discretion on a statement matters to you, ask what the descriptor will be — established operators bill under a neutral company name and will tell you what it is if asked.
Deposits
A first-time client should not be asked for a deposit, and requests for advance payment by wire, gift card or cryptocurrency are the single most common scam in the Greek market. Regular clients with an established relationship sometimes pay deposits for long or travel bookings, and that is a different situation entirely.
Tipping
Not expected and not built into pricing. If an evening was genuinely good, a tip is appreciated and remembered, but nobody is counting on it and its absence is not a slight.
Extensions
If you extend, settle the extension at the point you agree it rather than at the end. Same principle: money is dealt with at the start of the time it pays for.
